Jamie Goltz

MSc Student (Epidemiology), Collaborative Specialization in One Health

University of Guelph

I obtained my Honours Bachelor of Science (majoring in Biochemistry and minoring in Microbiology) at the University of Guelph. After my undergraduate degree, I performed research in the department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital on a genetics project for patients with undiagnosed diseases. I also worked in the School of Environmental Science at the University of Guelph to perform water testing for enteric viruses from surface and groundwater samples in the Grand River.

A year after my undergraduate degree, I enrolled in my MSc in Epidemiology, with a collaborative specialization in One Health at the University of Guelph. My project is a collaboration with a team at the Public Health Agency of Canada, focusing on antimicrobial resistance. It aims to examine extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae specifically, and to evaluate how Canadians can be exposed to these resistant bacteria and which exposures are higher risk than others. I am using a One Health approach in this research to help understand the interconnection of resistant bacteria transmission between humans, animals, and the environment, especially in the agri-food system, to provide a more holistic understanding of the human exposures.
